CVG Christmas Game Guide (patent pending)

It's that time of year again! As much as I deplore the consumerist, materialist, fill-up-the-void-in-your-life-with-more-crap attitude that pervades Adventide here in America, this is a videogame blog, and as anyone who's got kids/young adults/teenagers/boyfriends/girlfriends undoubtedly knows, videogames are not only almost always on someone's wish list, but they can make a good "filler" gift, as well.

So, to make the secular side of the season a little more bearable, I'm going to use this post as a "catch-all" for those interested in discussing the various games available right now - want to know if a game is appropriate for your son/daughter? In a Christmas budget crunch and need to know how to get the most bang for your buck? Got recommendations for other readers on good deals? Bored out of your mind and just need to vent about the long lines and crazy soccer moms who apparently don't know the difference between Rock Band 3 and Epic Mickey? Well, here's your chance!

So there you have it: the first official authorized Catholic Video Gamers all-purpose awesomesauce on toast-fueled Advent-2-Christmas Game Guide. Post away!

I'll start.

My brother has a choice: Kirby's Epic Yarn for the Wii or Super Scribblenauts for the Nintendo DS.

Which one should he get?

Love this blog concept! I've been searching for a game with a great and epic story. I grew up with Final Fantasy VII and loved the feel and depth of the story, exploration, character personalities, etc. Any suggestions on recent or upcoming epic storylines? Maybe I just need a good book. Keep up the good work.

Btw, I have an xbox and wii (doesn't help that I'm drawn to playstation games).

Hey johnpaulii,

If you're in the mood for an old-school Japanese role-playing game, you have a friend in the XBOX 360! I would recommend Tales of Vesperia (especially for the multiplayer), but if you prefer a "turn-based" battle system, I'd opt for Blue Dragon.

Final Fantasy XIII might be worth a rent, but I bought it myself at full price and found it absolutely terrible.

Thanks for the suggestion! I will pencil Vesperia in my gaming schedule. Concur on FFXIII. Always challenging to ballance gameplay and story. Anticipating the next great epic.

I'm a little late to the party, but if you snare de Blob at your local Gamestop, you're in for a treat. Got it for $10, might be one of my favorite games in a long time. Very original, catchy music, addicting gameplay.
